You Are Hypnotized! And It’s Not By Me!

How Hypnotherapy, CBT & Past Life Regression Will Help.
You are under a spell right now. An algorithm cast this spell, not a witch, but the effect is the same. Are you convinced that somewhere, someone else has the life you’re supposed to be living, and you are one scroll away from finding proof? That’s addiction!
Let me tell you about a client of mine. Tall, gorgeous, runs a company most people would kill for. She just closed on a house that made her friends gasp. Seven figures. The kind of house that’s supposed to be the finish line.
She called me and said:
“Is that all there is?
When I was a little girl in the 1950s, the song, “Is That All There Is,” played everywhere. Peggy Lee, gorgeous, blonde, sexy, and she sang about that exact ache decades before Instagram gave it a new stage.
Her melancholy song was about chasing one big moment after another, disappointment after disappointment, and finding that none of them delivered the payoff, the hit, she was promised. It’s a devastating song. And her answer, in the end, wasn’t to stop hoping. It was to keep dancing, to keep showing up for life even when the last big thing didn’t fill the hole she thought it would.
That’s the difference between resignation and what I’m actually asking of you. Peggy Lee’s narrator numbs herself and calls it survival. I want something else for you. I want you to feel the gap, stay present to it, and find out that the moment you’re standing in right now was never actually empty. You just weren’t looking at it.
THE TRANCE YOU DON’T KNOW YOU’RE IN
Here’s the part that should make you furious, not ashamed. This isn’t a personal failing. It’s neuroscience with a marketing budget behind it.
Researchers call it the hedonic treadmill. You buy the thing, you feel the rush, and within days your brain resets to baseline as if nothing happened. Most of us live around a 5 or 6 on the happiness scale no matter what we achieve, and we keep sprinting toward a finish line that keeps moving because we think this next purchase, this next promotion, this next house, will finally be the one that sticks.
Now add Instagram. Add TikTok. Add a highlight reel of everyone else’s best five seconds, curated and filtered and posted specifically to make you feel like you’re behind in a race nobody invited you to. Your nervous system cannot tell the difference between “she looks happy” and “she is happy.” It just registers the gap between her life and yours, and it gives you a very old, very reliable feeling: not enough.
That’s not weakness. Your reticular activating system is doing exactly what it evolved to do, just aimed at the wrong target, because people profit when you keep scrolling.
WHY MORE NEVER FEELS LIKE ENOUGH
My client’s real problem wasn’t the house. She’d outsourced her happiness to the next achievement, the next milestone, the next thing that was supposed to prove she’d made it. When the house didn’t do the job, she went looking for the next fix. That’s the achievement treadmill, and it never, ever pays out the way you think it will.
I told her what I tell almost everyone who sits across from me feeling successful and empty at the same time: you were never going to find happiness ahead of you. It’s only ever available right where you stand right now. “The Point of Power Stays in the Present!”
Byron Katie’s book “Loving What Is” is really neuroscience in action. Not resigning yourself to it and not settling. Actually, turning toward your life as it exists right now and finding out it was never as short of enough as your scroll-addled brain insisted. And if it needs to be changed, I encourage clients to make the change. Do it now!
THE WORK, NOT THE WILLPOWER
However, you can’t t think your way out of a trance. Believe me, I’ve tried talking clients out of comparison with logic alone, and logic loses to a dopamine hit every single time.
This is where hypnotherapy earns its keep. We go under the noise, past the highlight reels living rent-free in your subconscious, and we rebuild your actual baseline. Not the one Instagram assigned you. The one that’s true. Combine that with Cognitive Behavioral tools to catch the comparison spiral in real time, and past-life regression to show you, viscerally, that you survived and thrived long before smartphones existed to make you feel small, and something shifts. The trance breaks.
My client is doing better now. Not because she bought anything else. Because she finally noticed the house was never going to answer the question she was actually asking.
